Development of microsystem enhanced machine tool structures for lightweight and accuracy optimized (LEG²O) frames

B4_approachMachine tools are an essential part of modern processing industries since they cover more than 30% of the world market of production technology. Due to the high demand of specialized machine tools for producing reconfigurable and highly individual products, the necessity of innovative and adaptive concepts allowing fast and efficient production is a major challenge in terms of sustainable manufacturing.
In project A4 conventional monolithic frames are completely replaced by the integration of microsystem technology-based systems into machine tool (MST-MT) mechanical structures, granting a lightweight and accurate optimized (LEG²O) frame which can be maintained and repaired by replacing single modules rather than the whole frame. Smart active elements integrated in the modular assembly are able to deal with thermal or mechanical disturbances. Therefore this innovative approach offers a great perspective in terms of mobility, scalability and mutability of production systems with reduced costs and less resource consumption at the same time.
